Tin Can Island Port Command Gets New Area Controller
Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Friday, 22 May 2026, held a change-of-command ceremony following the elevation of its former Customs Area Controller.
Assistant Comptroller‑General (ACG) Frank Okechukwu Onyeka, who was recently promoted, formally handed over leadership of the command to Comptroller Joseph Anani.
Speaking at the ceremony, which filled the command’s conference room with officers and stakeholders, ACG Onyeka thanked staff for their support and urged them to extend the same cooperation to his successor.
He highlighted the command’s recent performance, saying it generated N1,609,874,328,972.55 in revenue for the 2025 fiscal year — exceeding its N1,524,669,999,478.52 target — and collected N401,011,998,443.71 in the first quarter of 2026.
ACG Onyeka also cited enforcement successes, including seizures of illicit drugs and other prohibited items with an estimated street value exceeding ₦35 billion.
He described these results as the product of discipline, intelligence‑driven operations, improved compliance strategies, robust stakeholder engagement, and modern trade facilitation measures that balance enforcement with legitimate trade.
“It is my pleasure to hand over to Comptroller Joseph Anani following my elevation to the rank of ACG,” Onyeka said. “Serving as the Customs Area Controller of this command has been the most challenging post in my career.”
Well‑wishers at the event praised Onyeka’s diligence, intelligence and open‑hearted leadership, and expressed confidence that Comptroller Anani would build on his predecessor’s achievements.
Comptroller Joseph Anani, in his remarks, thanked Comptroller‑General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and the NCS management for his deployment to the Tin Can Island Port Command. He acknowledged the command’s importance to national revenue, trade and security, and vowed to lead with humility and commitment.
“Under ACG Onyeka’s leadership, the command made significant progress in revenue collection, trade facilitation and the suppression of smuggling,” Anani said. “These achievements have raised the bar and positioned Tin Can Island Port as a critical gateway for legitimate trade. I pledge to build a command that is even more efficient, transparent and results‑oriented.”
Anani urged officers to adhere strictly to existing laws, guidelines and standard operating procedures, and to maintain professionalism, intelligence and discipline. He also called for continued collaboration with sister agencies operating within the command, stressing that national security and trade facilitation are shared responsibilities requiring mutual respect, timely information sharing and joint action.
Those present at the ceremony expressed hope that Comptroller Joseph Anani will surpass the command’s recent performance and sustain its momentum.
