Ogun Announces Revival of Olokola LNG, Lays Out Expanded Vision For Maritime Activities
Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has announced the revival of the long-dormant Olokola Liquefied Natural Gas (OKLNG) project, declaring a new economic era for Ogun Waterside as his administration advances plans to develop the coastal area into a major industrial and maritime hub.
Speaking at the commissioning of the reconstructed Gao–Ibiade Road over the weekend, the governor said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has confirmed its intention to restart the multi‑billion‑dollar OKLNG initiative.
He described the project as central to a wider strategy to attract investment and prepare the region for rapid industrial, commercial and maritime growth.
“The revival of OKLNG will be a game‑changer for Ogun Waterside,” Governor Abiodun said, noting that the reconstructed road is one of several critical infrastructure projects designed to open up the coastal communities to investors and trade.
Abiodun also reiterated his administration’s commitment to the proposed Ogun Deep Sea Port, saying the project remains on course.
He added that recent discoveries of premium‑grade crude in the area have strengthened plans for complementary facilities — including a refinery, naval base, dockyard and logistics hubs — that together would position Ogun Waterside as a major oil, gas and maritime centre.
“We are preparing for the imminent surge of economic activity in this local government area. Ogun Waterside is a jewel that must be fully tapped,” the governor said, stressing that the road reconstruction will ease access and support anticipated investment flows.
The governor announced that work on the J4–Gao Road will begin soon and will extend to Abigi, the Ogun Waterside local government headquarters, further improving connectivity across the coastal corridor.
Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure Engr. Ade Akinsanya described the reconstructed Gao–Ibiade Road — previously in a deplorable state — as a durable intervention intended to stimulate commerce and mobility in the area.
Local lawmakers welcomed the announcements. Hon. Joseph Adegbesan, member representing Ijebu North, Ijebu East and Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency, praised the governor’s intervention and called for reconstruction of the J4 Junction–Iwopin Road and the second phase of Gao–Ibiade to unlock further economic potential.
Hon. Shamsideen Adekunle Lawal, Ogun Waterside’s state assembly member, said work has commenced on the Deep Sea Port and Naval Base projects and that oil exploration is underway.
Governor Abiodun said his administration remains focused on ensuring equitable development across all 20 local government areas, with Ogun Waterside poised to become a strategic centre for Nigeria’s oil, gas and maritime sectors.
