FERRY SERVICES : Lagos Announces Introduction Of Lekki Water Taxi Initiative

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has spotlighted transformative strides in water transportation as part of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s multimodal transport agenda, marking the third year of his second term.

The ministry also announced exciting 2026 plans, including the Lekki Water Taxi initiative, which promises to expand high-speed water taxi services along key corridors, alongside modernization of ferry terminals and integration with the Cowry Card unified payment system already linking rails, buses, and ferries.

At the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing, Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized how strategic investments in waterways are easing traffic congestion and boosting connectivity.

Key highlights include nearly two million passengers now using Lagos waterways monthly, supported by new ferry routes, safety campaigns, widespread life jacket distribution, and the innovative OMI-EKO electric ferry initiative—all positioning water transport as a safe, reliable alternative to roads.

These efforts align with broader sustainability goals, featuring electric ferries and cleaner fuel options, complementing rail expansions like Blue Line Phase II and Red Line enhancements that have served millions.

Commissioner Osiyemi reaffirmed the commitment to a safe, integrated, affordable transport network under the THEMES+ Agenda, with tech upgrades like E-Call Up for trucks and ANPR cameras enhancing overall efficiency.
