NIWA Pushes West Coast Cargo Jetty To Supercharge Regional Trade Via Waterways

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is set to drive the development of a West Coast cargo jetty, boosting seamless goods movement across West Africa.

To tap Nigeria’s expansive inland waterways, NIWA plans to activate existing jetties for a pilot cargo route linking Nigeria and Ghana.

According to a statement on Thursday, the initiative emerged during ‘s joint inspection of Lagos’ Marina Jetty, involving the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), NIWA, and Ghanaian trade representatives from corporate and private sectors.

NIWA’s Acting Managing Director, Mr. Yusuf Girei—who led the delegation alongside General Manager (Marine) Engr. Horsefall Dakio and Lagos Area Manager Engr. Sarat Braimah—affirmed the agency’s support for the jetty. He spotlighted NIWA’s vast waterfront

” infrastructure in Lagos, primed for tech-savvy, efficient cargo ops with direct market access.”he said.

Girei emphasized NIWA’s waterway network as a powerhouse for West African inland transport, drawing on proven success along the Calabar–Cameroon route.

“We are committed to leveraging our infrastructure and expertise to facilitate regional trade.

“Our experience on the Calabar–Cameroon route demonstrates the viability of inland water transport in boosting market access within Nigeria and across West Africa,” Girei said.
