Lagos State To Retrofit 50,000 Streetlights In 2026
The Lagos State Government has indicated interest in fixing some of the moribund streetlights on across major state roads.
The state government showcased its bold clean energy agenda at the 14th West Africa Clean Energy and Environment Trade Fair & Conference (WACEE 2026), held March 17–18, 2026, at Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
A standout commitment is the retrofitting up to 50,000 streetlights with solar technology to slash emissions, cut costs, and boost efficiency across the city.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, Overseeing Permanent Secretary Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola delivered the keynote, aligning with the theme “Accelerating West Africa’s Green Transition: Innovation, Policy & Investment.” Under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, Lagos is turning vision into action.
This streetlight retrofit anchors Phase II of the Imole Eko Programme, building on Phase I’s success with over 22,000 solar streetlights already deployed.
It complements broader efforts like the 2GW Lagos Grid-Scale Solar Programme, solar powering of 172 schools, 11 Primary Health Care Centres, General Hospitals at Ketu-Ejinrin and Ikota, and key sites including LTV 8, Lagos Central Mosque, and INEC offices.
These initiatives deliver real gains: enhanced energy reliability, private sector momentum, and investor appeal. Backed by the Lagos Electricity Sector Reform Law, Electricity Act 2023, and Lagos Electricity Law 2024, Lagos is fostering a competitive market, electric mobility pilots, and opportunities in battery storage, green hydrogen, and waste-to-energy.
