BORDER SECURITY: Nigerian Navy Moves To Establish Base In Taraba

The Nigerian Navy has advanced plans to establish a naval base in Kashimbilla, Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, as part of efforts to strengthen security along the Nigeria-Cameroon border and protect strategic waterways.

The move is aimed at tackling rising insecurity in the area, especially around the Kashimbilla waterway, which officials described as strategically important to national security and critical infrastructure protection.

The Taraba State Government expressed support for the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that could help address security challenges affecting border communities.

Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, disclosed this while receiving a naval delegation in Jalingo, noting that a survey for the proposed base had already been conducted.

He said the project would not only improve security but also support intelligence gathering and create opportunities for local residents to contribute to safety efforts.

Rear Admiral Jonathan Mamman, who led the Naval Headquarters delegation, said Kashimbilla was chosen because of its strategic location, including its proximity to the Kashimbilla hydroelectric project, the airport corridor, and the border with Cameroon.

He explained that the proposed base would enhance surveillance, deter criminal activities on inland waterways, and boost the Navy’s operational presence in the region.
