NIWA To Deploy Five New Boats To Sokoto, Strengthening Waterways Safety

 

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing safety and rescue operations across Nigeria’s waterways, following a recent boat accident in Sokoto State that prompted swift intervention from rescue agencies.

The federal government through the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), has also disclosed that five new boats would be deployed to Sokoto State to promote waterway safety.

This was disclosed during an August 25, 2025 meeting, between the Minister of State for Works, Mohammed Bello Goronyo, Esq and the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamji, and senior officials of the agency.

 

In his remarks, NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamji, announced that the Federal Government will soon receive five new boats, including one aluminum and one iron vessel set for deployment in Sokoto State.

He also disclosed immediate steps are underway to clear water hyacinth blockages that hinder free passage on the waterways.

Additionally, arrangements for distributing life jackets to riverine communities have been finalized and will commence in the coming weeks, further enhancing safety measures.

Reaffirming the government’s dedication, Minister Goronyo emphasized that such engagements must continue as ongoing platforms for collaboration rather than one-off events.

He stressed that the administration remains fully committed to providing essential infrastructure, equipment, and policies to prevent casualties and ensure safe, efficient, and secure inland water transportation nationwide.

The Minister further commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that the administration’s vision and policies have laid a strong foundation for improved safety, infrastructure, and service delivery across critical sectors, including water transport.

This latest commitment underlines the Federal Government’s resolve to safeguard riverine communities and promote sustainable development on Nigeria’s waterways.

He assured that the government will continue to prioritize the protection of lives and navigation safety on inland waterways.

Highlighting the importance of coordinated response efforts, Minister Goronyo commended NIWA and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their prompt action during the Sokoto incident, which saved numerous lives and ensured rapid victim recovery.

“Their swift synergy before other responders arrived exemplifies the power of unity in emergency response,” Goronyo said.
