The International Maritime Organization confirms 46 attacks on ships near Strait of Hormuz; Secretary‑General welcomes US‑Iran peace agreement

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) says it has verified at least 46 attacks against international shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict began on 28 February 2026.

In response to the peace agreement announced between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, IMO Secretary‑General Arsenio Dominguez welcomed the deal and called it an important step toward restoring safety in the vital maritime corridor.

Dominguez said the agreement signals a return to dialogue, multilateralism and diplomacy and will help safeguard freedom of navigation for seafarers and vessels traversing the route.

He offered condolences to the victims of the attacks, paying particular tribute to the seafarers and families affected and recognising their resilience after prolonged uncertainty.

The Secretary‑General added that the ceasefire creates the conditions for IMO to move forward with its plan to evacuate thousands of seafarers currently stranded in the area.

Implementation , he noted will proceed in close coordination with Member States and partners and will take time to ensure necessary safety and security guarantees are in place.

IMO reiterated its commitment to maritime safety, protection of seafarers, freedom of navigation and the uninterrupted flow of global trade.
