WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY: General Hospital Apapa Harps On Continuous Enlightenment, Awareness.

The Medical Director/ Chief Executive Officer of the General Hospital Apapa, Dr Keshinro Ajibola has harped  on continuous enlightenment and awareness on the importance of blood donation nationwide.

Ajibola who made this known on Tuesday, during the continuous public Enlightenment and Awareness to mark the 2023 World Blood Donor Day in Apapa, stated that “To keep someone nation’s blood supply stable, you have to donate blood regularly.

He said blood is needed every day of the year, adding that there is no substitute for blood.

According to medical expert , “It’s only those who made donation provide the only supply of life saving blood for those in need of blood.”

He explained further that blood is very essential to help patients survive surgeries, treatment of cancer, chronic illnesses and traumatic injuries.

” This lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation. The need for blood is constant in life.

The Medical Director, equally said that blood donation improves skin aging through the reduction of iron deposit in elderly skin.

Ajibola said donating blood can save up to three lives. The simple generous act of giving blood helps patients like Heather and Earl get the blood transfusion they need.

In conclusion , he said if you are eligible to donate blood, then I encourage you to make an appointment to donate blood today, then donate again and again to ensure there is a steady ongoing supply to help those in need. But if you are not eligible to donate blood, then there are still many ways to help, by finding more donor.

The Chief Medical Laboratory Scientist, General Hospital Apapa Mr. Victor Johnson, said the most important benefits donating blood is that you are saving someone’s life. The blood donated can be used three times because it is sectioned into various components.

“It revitalise the fragile health condition of a human. The human body is capable of regenerating blood within a few hours after donation,”Johnson stated.

Dr. Mosunmola Adebayo of the obstetrics and gynaecology department while speaking , on blood transfusion benefits, said that ” This is  potentially lifesaving procedure can help replace blood lost due to surgery or injury. She said further, a blood transfusion can also help if an illness prevents someone’s body from making or some of the blood components correctly.
