LASWA,Mitimeth Begin 5th Edition  Of Water Hyacinth Recycling Initiative In Ijede, Falomo

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) in conjunction with a renowned Lagos based social enterprise;  Mitimeth  has commenced the 5th edition of the Annual Water Hyacinth Recycling Initiative where members of the community are  trained on the economic benefits and recycling of the weed.

 

Water hyacinth cannot be totally eradicated but be controlled through harvesting into new materials and valuable products.

 

 

According to a statement,the 10-day recycling training commenced on the 29th of November, 2021 at the Ijede LCDA.

However, this year’s training will take place at Ijede and Central Business District ( Falomo).

“It is important to note that water hyacinth is one of the fastest growing weed across the  globe infesting water bodies in over  fifty countries,

 

“It reproduces every two weeks and thrives in polluted waters, it is a renewable resource but also an environmental menace and threat to biodiversity.

In the past, this initiative has trained over four hundred people in the Badagry, Ikorodu,  Epe, Falomo and Badore axis, giving them skills to transform water hyacinth to economically beneficial products.

 

The Agency is turning the menace of water hyacinth into sustainable lifestyle and fashion for people in coastal communities with requisite skills to transform the hyacinth into valuable handcrafted materials such as bags, mats, furniture items and textile decorations.
