Director General, Mall. Balarabe Shehu Ilelah has enjoined the new broadcast licencees to avoid sensational and fake news, and to also ensure that their stations are not used as platforms to disintegrate Nigeria.
He gave this advice at the occasion of the issuance of letters of provisional approval to the newly licenced companies, organisations and institutions of higher learning, on Monday 4th October, 2021, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Mall. Ilelah further noted that the broadcast licence issued, is not to jeopardise national security but to promote national interest and foster unity in our diversity.
He added that the NBC, will not hesitate to revoke any licence that operates contrary to the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
The NBC Boss, therefore, urged the new licencees to study the provisions of the National Broadcasting Commission Act, Cap II Laws of the Federation, 2004, Nigeria Broadcasting Code and other extant laws, Rules and Regulation in the broadcast industry, while ensuring they operate within the armbit of the Code.
Mall. Ilelah while congratulating the new stakeolders in the broadcast industry, reminded them that, the licence given to them, is to enable the operators contribute their meaningful quota to the development of Nigeria, create jobs and build bridges, as well as, become partners in progress with the Commission to develop and deepen the broadcast sector’s contribution to the nation’s GDP.
Speaking on behalf of the new licencees, Prof. Moh’d Kuta Yahaya of Enuman Community Radio, Bida, Niger State, expressed their appreciation to the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, for the approval of broadcast licence and, thereby, giving them the opportunity to contribute to the nation’s development through broadcasting.
