In what can be described as a first of its kind in Nigerian grassroots politics, Senator Wasiu Eshilokun Sanni, representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, on Monday, 16 June 2025, in Lagos, supported chairmanship and councillorship candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) within his constituency with cash gifts ahead of the Local Government elections.
Eshilokun, who distributed cash to the contestants, assured the grassroots politicians of the party’s support in their bid to win their respective wards and councils. He tasked them to work hard for the APC, noting that people had helped him financially during his own grassroots political days.
DAILY FOCUS NIGERIA reports that over N104.5 million was distributed through cheques and cash to candidates within his constituency, while disclosing that 93 Councillors, 13 Local Government party chairmen, and 13 Chairmen and Vice Chairmen benefited from the exercise.
Giving a further breakdown, the Senator stated that 13 Local Government party chairmen would receive N2 million each, while the 13 contestants vying for Chairmen and Vice Chairmen positions would receive N2.5 million each. Additionally, 93 Councillors would receive N500,000 each.

According to him, the contestants should use the cash judiciously to ensure they secure the right votes from the masses. He encouraged them to campaign vigorously, stressing that there should be no room for complacency despite the party’s strength.
“During my campaign at that level, people helped me, and I deemed it fit to support those contesting at that level,” he said.
He further emphasized that the money is meant for the local government election campaigns and urged the candidates to use it responsibly.
The Senator, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, commended party members for their large turnout and pointed out that candidates contesting under the constituency should be supported.
He prayed for the contestants’ victory at the polls, reassuring that the APC is a party that truly cares about grassroots members.
A highlight of the exercise was the distribution of cheques by top party officials to the candidates.
Meanwhile, a cross-section of contestants commended the Senator for his support, describing his gesture as noble.
