Okomu Oil Palm Marks International Women’s Day

The Edo State government has reaffirmed its dedication to empowering women in the state, aiming to foster an inclusive and developed society.

According to a statement, Hon. Christabel Omoh Ekwu, the state commissioner for social development and gender issues, emphasized this commitment during the activities organized by the gender committee of Okomu Oil Palm Company Plc to mark International Women’s Day.

Represented by Mrs. Irenose Ihensekhien, a director in the Ministry, Commissioner Omoh Ekwu highlighted the pivotal role women play in societal development, stressing the importance of investing in women.

She underscored the government’s zero-tolerance stance on gender-based violence, citing the establishment of a specialized task force empowered by law to address such offences.

The commissioner added that government remains dedicated to collaborating with institutions and corporate entities to empower the girl child in the state.

In her welcome address, Paulyn Ojukwu, chairperson of Okomu Oil Palm Company PLC’s gender committee, echoed this year’s theme “Invest in Women, Accelerate Progress,” recognizing women’s significant societal contributions.

She emphasized that investing in girls yields positive impacts on society, citing women’s achievements across various fields.

Paulyn Ojukwu disclosed that the gender committee has extended its awareness campaigns to neighbouring communities, advocating for increased investment in the girl child.

She encouraged victims of gender-based violence to speak out and seek assistance from relevant authorities.

In his goodwill message, the Human Resources Manager, Okomu Oil Palm Company PLC, Mr. IK Osunbor while acknowledging the role of women in the society said the International Women’s Day is a clarion call on all stakeholders to invest in women towards achieving accelerated progress.

Also speaking, the company’s communication officer, Mr. Fidelis Olise while congratulating the women said the commemoration of the day is a sign that the world acknowledges the importance of women in the society.

Mr. Olise said although Nigeria and Africa are yet to fully embrace the 35 percent affirmative action with this kind of enlightenment very soon the continent will compete with Europe and America in female participation in social and public offices.

Some of the participants at the 2024 International Women’s Day celebration at Okomu Oil Palm Company PLC said the theme of the celebration is apt as it will draw the attention of policy makers to create an enabling environment that will stimulate the growth of the woman.

The participants who include Mrs. Dora Osiobaifo from Udo community, Christiana Tom from Safarogbo Community, and Mrs. Eniemi Peter from Ofunama community appreciated management of Okomu Oil Palm Company PLC for the efforts in the development of its neighbouring communities through enlightenment, training and provision of corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects in their various communities.
