Nigerian Navy Averts Major Disaster With Swift Fire Response At Kirikiri Correctional Quarters

The Nigerian Navy’s rapid intervention prevented a potential catastrophe after a midnight fire erupted at the Kirikiri Correctional Service Quarters in Apapa, Lagos, on April 22, 2026.

According to a statement on Thursday, disclosed that around 11:00 p.m., a gas cylinder explosion ignited a blaze in one residential building, quickly spreading to an adjacent structure and razing two buildings entirely.

While significant property damage occurred, no lives were lost in the incident.

Navy personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) WEY and the Naval Ordnance Depot (NOD) sprang into action, deploying two fire trucks to battle the flames.

Their efforts contained the fire before the arrival of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, stopping it from escalating further.

Captain AA Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, commended the team’s professionalism in the official press statement.

The Navy’s statement reiterated its dedication to public safety, urging greater fire awareness and preventive actions while pledging continued support to civil authorities in emergencies.
