The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command (WNC), Rear Admiral MG Oamen, convened a tripartite meeting with key stakeholders, in a strategic move to enhance maritime security and streamline fishing activities.
According to a post on Navy ‘ s Meta page on Wednesday, the meeting brought together representatives from the Federal Department of Fisheries and the Nigerian Trawlers Owners Association (NITOA) at the Headquarters WNC Conference Room in Apapa, Lagos.
The high-level engagement focused on addressing critical issues affecting fishing operations within WNC Area of Responsibility. A major highlight of the meeting was the growing concern over the unauthorised engagement of armed security personnel onboard fishing vessels, a practice deemed both illegal and risky in the context of National maritime security regulations.
Rear Admiral Oamen reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime domain while stressing the need for all stakeholders to operate within legal frameworks.
He emphasised that the use of unauthorised armed guards onboard fishing vessels could undermine coordinated security efforts and potentially escalate conflicts at sea.
The representatives of the Federal Department of Fisheries and NITOA expressed appreciation for the Nigerian Navy’s proactive approach and pledged to work closely with WNC to ensure full compliance with maritime security protocols.
In closing, the FOC WNC reiterated the Navy’s willingness to support the fishing industry through intelligence sharing, and continued dialogue to foster mutual understanding and operational efficiency.
