LAWMA Declares 12,000 Metric Tonnes Of Waste Removal From Lagos Inland Waterways

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has revealed how itintensified citywide sanitation efforts with targeted clean-ups across Marina, Apapa, Lekki and Lagos Island, and sustained deep-clean operations on major highways and commercial districts.
LAWMA’s disclosed that under the Sanwo Olu administration,spanning seven years, it intensified coastal cleanup campaign, combined with partnerships and expanded processing capacity, underscoring Lagos State’s commitment to cleaner waterways, safer beaches, and a more sustainable waste management system.
In a statement, weekend,a copy sighted by DAILY FOCUS NIGERIA, LASWA pointed out that it standout achievement during the period under review was expanded coastal and waterway sanitation drive: routine inland and coastal cleanup operations removed more than 12,000 metric tonnes of waste from waterways and beaches, including cleanup interventions in Five Cowries Creek and multiple coastal beaches.
LAWMA also noted that it has upgraded the Ikosi Biogas Plant, commissioning a new biodigester and updated control systems on 9 February 2026 to improve organic waste processing.
In support of circular economy goals, the agency said it partnered with Lafarge Africa Plc to convert non-recyclable waste into alternative fuel for cement production, reducing landfill pressure and promoting sustainable waste processing.
To strengthen healthcare waste management, the waste management agency, 35 private sector PSP operators were deployed across the three senatorial districts. LAWMA affirmed that it registered about 3,920 health facilities statewide, treating an estimated 80,000–105,000 kg of medical waste monthly.
Capacity-building and regulatory achievements, the statement revealed that included re-orienting 174 PSP operators, reaching 2,994 streets, conducting 38 market advocacy sessions, and engaging 257 wards and 55 LGAs/LCDA.
“To boost recycling, 579 recyclers were registered and 19 prospective recycling facilities were inspected for compliance. LAWMA’s Buy-Back initiative recovered over 10,848 kg of recyclables from households and communities, and 85 schools were engaged in school recycling programs.”
Enforcement operations , LAWMA added that it saw 931 persons apprehended for waste offences, 2,251 sites inspected, 1,711 contravention notices issued, and 239 sites sealed.
The agency also revoked licenses for five underperforming PSP operators who failed to meet service standards.
