Agriculture farmers under the aegis of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), has urged farmers to practice the use of local manure so as to promote public health.
The appeal was made recently by the Chairman of the association, Kaduna State chapter, Mr. Nuhu Aminu.
While explaining the impact of manure on farmlands, he disclosed that the application of local manure helps in reducing the use of conventional fertilizers which usually stands at 10 bags annually, adding that farmers only require 5 bags if manures are used constantly.
Aminu added that manure can revive farmland for more than two years when applied, while chemical fertilizer which only lasts for a year, kills the land gradually.
He noted that researches conducted by experts show that food grown with manure is healthier, satisfying and more nutritious than the food produced with chemical fertilizer.
The chairman further called for action towards the early supply of manures before the wet season begins properly.
He also encouraged farmers to sell one-third of their harvests and use the earnings to purchase fertilizers rather than wait for the government to provide subsidized ones, which usually delay farming proceedings.
