The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is doubling down on emergency readiness, with its Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, reaffirming a strong partnership with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to enhance disaster management, coordinated responses, and safety drills at airports like Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA).

This commitment came during a courtesy visit by LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary/CEO, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, to FAAN Headquarters in Lagos, as contained in a statement.

Mrs. Kuku praised LASEMA’s vital support in past emergencies, calling their collaboration “strategic” for mock drills, incident management, and aviation safety aligned with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) standards.

She welcomed LASEMA’s proposal for FAAN’s involvement in the new Lagos Institute of Disaster Management—a Lagos State Government initiative with Lagos State University (LASU) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM)—but stressed that all training (e.g., Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, recovery, and logistics) must meet strict regulatory guidelines.

FAAN’s existing emergency system features designated Incident Commanders, with South-West Regional Manager Mr. Arewa Olatokunbo named as the focal point for ongoing talks.

In parallel, FAAN’s Directorate of Cargo Development and Services (DCDS) hosted a stakeholders’ engagement on May 12, 2026, at MMIA, themed “Strategic Engagement Session on Cargo Village Development and Operational Framework.” Representing DCDS Director Mr. Lekan Thomas, General Manager Mrs. Alao Mamman urged collaboration on the Aviacargo Village project to boost efficiency, standards, and security—efforts that indirectly support emergency preparedness through better access controls, regulatory compliance, and co-located operations.
