The International Labour Organization (ILO) is actively supporting the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) in advocating for the upgrade of maritime training institutions across Nigeria.
According to a statement, during a recent visit by Dr. Amos Hosea Kuje, the ILO Regional Advisor for Labour Conventions, to the MWUN President-General Comrade Francis Bunu, the emphasis was placed on the urgent modernization and enhancement of these institutions.
He stated that this upgrade is critical to ensure Nigerian seafarers receive training that meets international standards, keeping cadets at par with their global counterparts and significantly boosting their professional standing worldwide
.Dr. Amos stressed the importance of implementing the Cabotage laws effectively to increase employment opportunities for Nigerian seafarers and enhance their skills through regular and advanced training programs.

A key recommendation from the ILO was the initiation of a single Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that would unify the representation of both ratings and officers on board vessels to improve labor conditions across the sector.
On his part, Comrade Bunu assured that MWUN, in collaboration with industry agencies, would vigorously pursue the ILO’s suggestions, aiming for swift implementation of these strategic reforms to improve the welfare, training, and productivity of Nigerian seafarers.
These efforts , he stated aligned with broader national policies promoting safety, capacity building, and modernization within the maritime domain, reaffirming MWUN’s role as a pivotal advocate for maritime workers’ rights and professional development.
The Sailor and astute maritime administrator, promised the ILO Advisor that the union will definitely swing into action with the cooperation of some Agency in the sector towards making sure that all issues raised here would be followed with the required zeal to getting them accomplished for the betterment of Nigerian Seafarers, as the Maritime sector would witness more efficient, effective and seamless productivity in no distant period.
