NURTW, LASDRI Synergize On Festive Period Safety Advocacy

In demonstration of its continued advocacy of road safety and sanity on Lagos roads, the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) has partnered the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos Chapter to flag off the Y2025 ember months safety advocacy campaign at Ketu Motor Park, Lagos, with the theme: “Drivers Education, An Antidote To Road Accidents And Well-Being”

Speaking at an event which attracted road union members and stakeholders in the transport sector, General Manager, Lagos State Drivers’ Institute, Mrs. Tiamiyu Afusat said the ember months safety advocacy is crucial because our roads are experiencing significant strains during this period and worsened by reckless driving and behaviour of motorists.

According to the LASDRI Boss, collaboration with relevant stakeholders on ember months safety advocacy would focus on raising awareness about specific causes of road accidents, and it also serves as a platform to address road safety challenges and educate road users, particularly commercial drivers, on the dangers associated with speeding and reckless driving during this period.

Tiamiyu stressed further that the synergy between LASDRI and NURTW also lends credence to the United Nations Decade of Action for road safety (2021-2030), which seeks and works towards reducing road traffic fatalities and injuries.

She observed that driver education complements the ember months road safety advocacy by teaching essential skills and rudiments required to combat heightened risk, like increased vehicular movement at this period, adverse weather, driver error and speeding.

Also speaking, the Lagos State NURTW Secretary, Comrade Teslim Usman, said the ember months road safety advocacy focuses on safety while preventing economic losses from accidents, which also contributes to economic sustainability and supports gross domestic products by reducing social and socioeconomic costs associated with road carnage.

The chief scribe also noted that the ember months safety collaboration would foster safety awareness and the need for collective responsibility to ensure safer roads, particularly during festive seasons.

In the same vein, the representative of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority ( LASTMA) and Deputy Director of Safety, Mrs Adeniji Olufunke and the representative of Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Services (VIS), Zonal Head Ojota, Engr. Ogabi Taofik urged the motoring public to always see traffic management authority officials as friends working for their well-being -being, they advised drivers to always pay attention to their vehicle needs and condition so as not to pose a threat to themselves and other road users.

Highlights of the event were: free eye screening, blood pressure and blood sugar test, and free health counselling by Lagos State Health Officials for over 150 drivers at the event.
