FRSC Launches 8th UN Global Road Safety Week To Promote Safe Walking , Cycling Across Nigeria

A joint press conference was held at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) National Headquarters on May 12, 2025, to mark the start of the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week.

The week-long event, running from May 12 to 18, focuses on the theme “Streets for Life: #Make Walking Safe #Make Cycling Safe,” aiming to raise global awareness about road safety and accident prevention for pedestrians and cyclists.

The event attracted key stakeholders from the road transportation sector, including Prof. Sydney Ibeanusi, UN Decade of Action Focal Person; Hajiya Dr. Nafisa Shehu Mohammed, National President of ROSOWA; representatives from the Ministry of Health, WHO, State Security Service, Ministry of Transport, Nigeria Institute of Transport Technology, NGOs, and civil society organizations.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed reaffirmed FRSC’s commitment to the goals of the week, pledging to prioritize pedestrian and cyclist safety through inclusive road designs, stronger traffic law enforcement, public education campaigns, and data-driven strategies to monitor risks and evaluate interventions.
He also committed personally to obeying traffic rules and prioritizing vulnerable road users as a driver.

This global campaign encourages governments, agencies, and communities to implement proven interventions to make walking and cycling safer, contributing to healthier, more sustainable, and equitable cities worldwide.
