DESPITE PROMOTION: MWUN Seeks Salary Structure Review For NPA Workers, Laments Ten Years Stagnancy  

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has called on management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to review the salary structure of workers under employment, lamenting that despite the recent promotions , the employees are yet to feel the impact in monetary terms .

 

President General MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju who disclosed this to our correspondent recently, stressed the need for management to look inward and review the salary structure of workers adding that the stagnancy for over ten years was not encouraging.

“Management should ensure that they fill those vacant position for Nigerians to occupy because the way it’s going now is that we may not have junior workers again and part of the work the senior are doing now is meant for the junior.

“We may not have them again because when you promote the junior workers to the senior cadre who occupies the vacant position?”,he queried.”

Speaking further, the PG noted that”So we are appealing to management of NPA to review the salary of the workers which I think he (Koko) has it in mind to do.

“When was the last time management of NPA increase the salary of workers? employment should be given to workers as well.

He commended the acting Managing Director of NPA , Mohammed Bello Koko for the recent promotions of workers but maintained that due process must be adhered to for employees welfare packages as at when due.

The President General, also called on the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency NIMASA for the restablishment of  labour pool for dockworkers and seafarers in line with international convention.

Adeyanju expressed worries over the lackluster attitude of the regulatory agency toward providing the facilities for dockers and seamen.

Adeyanju reiterated that the labour pool for workers would serve as centre point where they can  have a sense of belonging and will also serve as means sanitising the movement of workers  within the port environment.

According to him, some management staff of NIMASA allegedly discouraged previous Director Generals of the agency for the provision of the pool , calling on the current man at the helms of the apex regulatory agency to ensure that the facility is establishment for workers.

 

He noted that MWUN would embrace any form of pool for workers adding some of the staff at NIMASA are anti- union, who are bent on remarketing the MWUN.

 

He called on Dr. Bashir Jamoh to disregard negative advices from insiders about demands of the Nigerian workers saying most of them do not want him to succeed.

 

The PG commended the Alhaji Ramalan for his contribution to maritime labour activities in time past, noting that he brought changes to the shipping industry.

 

He affirmed that the dock labour sub sector of the maritime industry suffered setback after his tenure at NIMASA pointing out  other past director generals of the  regulatory agency failed to look inward for the betterment of the seafarers and dockworkers.
