World Decent Work Day 2025: MWUN Tasks Employers To Prioritize Workers Safety

On World Decent Work Day (WDW) 2025, the President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, called on employers and governments worldwide to prioritize safety, fair remuneration, and a conducive work environment for all workers.

According to a statement by Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, Head of Media, MWUN,
the President General further said that the WDW is a day for recognition as it is a call for action; for together, “we can build a future where decent work is a reality for workers and not a mere day dream, adding that to achieve this noble objective, it must be through a working democracy in action in every nation.

Speaking under the theme “For Democracy To Deliver Decent Work,” Comrade Bunu emphasized that decent work can only be achieved within a thriving democracy that values the dignity and rights of workers.

He highlighted the urgent need for social protection and living wages for millions of workers in Africa, stressing that safe and respectful workplaces are essential elements of decent labour.

Comrade Bunu urged leaders to place the welfare of their people above profit to create sustainable economies grounded in respect for labor rights.

The MWUN leader appealed to governments across the continent to strengthen democratic institutions to ensure improved working conditions, as many workers currently live below acceptable standards of living, negatively impacting their well-being.

He described World Decent Work Day as not only a day for recognition but a call to action to build a future where decent work is a reality for all, achievable only through active democratic governance.

Employers are thus encouraged to commit to safe, fair, and dignified work environments in line with this global call for decent work.
