Senate Upgrades AuchiPoly To City University Of Technology

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday , passed three bills following a clause-by-clause consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TetFund.

The reports on the bills were presented by the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Babba Kaita.

The upper chamber passed a bill seeking to establish the City University of Technology, Auchi, Edo State and the Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko, Delta State.

While the third is the Federal College of Education, Giwa, Kaduna.

Senator James Manager from Delta State sponsored the bill on the Nigeria Maritime University, while Senator Francis Alimikhena, from Edo state sponsored that of the University of Technology, Auchi.

Senator Uba Sani from Kaduna also sponsored the bill for the establishment of the Federal College of Education, Giwa, in Kaduna State.

While presenting the report, Kaita said that the Federal Polytechnic Auchi was currently running degree programmes in affiliation with Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra with enrollment of over 50, 000 students on full and part-time.

Recalls that Yaba College of Technology in Lagos and Kaduna Polytechnic were upgraded to universities in the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo and have yet to take off.
