A civil Society group, Crusade for Justice (CFJ) has cautioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to respect the orders of a competent court of the land and release Barrister Monday Ubani.
In a press statement made available to Journalists, CFJ, a Lagos based civil society group frowned at what it called “brutal and reckless” detention of the rights activist, an unrepentant advocate of good governance, Monday Ubani despite a positive order of a competent court.
According to the statement signed by the president of the group, Richard Nwankwo, which stated that it’s very pathetic and deeply saddening, that a government agency could pervert the course of rule of law.
“A government agency supported by taxpayers funds, could be glaringly contemptuous and exceedingly unprofessional in handling a case of this nature, bordering on mere suretyship and nothing more,” the release read.
The said action the release also said is ‘one abuse too many’, it further stated that the release order by the court to EFCC to arraign Monday Ubani within a specified period or admit him on bail is his constitutional right.
It called on well meaning Nigerians and civil societies to rise up to this affront, and demonic rape on our judiciary.
The release also solicited for nothing but absolute and unmitigated compliance to due process and freedom for Ubani.
“considering the extremely debased and questionable disposition of the leadership of EFCC, we call for the release of Ubani and all those being unlawfully detained in your gulag now,” the release espoused..
The EFCC had on Wednesday 3rd called on the NBA to condemn the ‘illegal practice’ perpetrated by Ubani rather than vilify her.
Monday Ubani and Christopher Enai, a Nigerian ex- senator who represented Bayelsa state were detained by the EFCC on March 19, 2019 for their failure to produce the chairman of Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Ngozi Olejeme who they stood for as sureties.
The action of the EFCC has been condemned by the NBA, civil society groups and well meaning Nigerians.
It would be recalled that a family source of Ubani stated on Tuesday that he (Monday) collapsed in the EFCC detention on Tuesday morning from severe dehydration and high blood pressure.
