PROTEST UPDATE: Fourteen Vessels Trapped At Lagos Ports , As Strike Continues

At least fourteen vessels with various commodities have been trapped in the two seaports in Lagos following the industrial action embarked upon by members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) over disagreement of wages with International Oil Companies (IOCs).
Some of the items DAILYFOCUS NEWS ONLINE gathered are perishable items, while others are delicate commodities that need to exit the ports on time.
Though the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA),could not tackle the situation at hand, President – General, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adeyanju Adewale, on Thursday said that workers would continue the indefinite strike embarked upon until the International Oil Companies(IOCs) show reasonable commitment on outstanding monies owe stevedoring contractors.
Adeyanju while addressing members of the union at the Lagos Ports Complex entry gate, noted that the struggle will continue as victory is certain.
The MWUN boss who had earlier toured Tin Can Island Port along with other branch executives , lauded effort made by the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Hadiza Bala Usman for the solidarity support in ensuring that the IOCs pay all outstanding.
He also disclosed that another round of meeting is expected to hold at about 2pm ,assuring members of the union that the outcome of the interaction would determine if the strike would continue on Friday or not.
He maintained that all other seaports nationwide have been shutdown and will continue until the multinationals do the needful.
Our correspondent who toured the two ports gathered that about 14 vessels are currently trapped at the two major seaports in Lagos.
Also addressing the gathering ,President NPA Branch,MWUN,Comrade Ifeanyi Mazeli reiterated that the presidency is aware of what the shutdown has caused the nations economy ,adding that the union will not bow to pressure from any quarters until justice is served.
While recounting the outcome of Wednesday meeting with management Mazeli , commended the union’s boss for his resilience and commitment for ensuring that members paid all entitlement and benefits they deserved.
He called on members of the union to support the solidarity movement until the objective has been achieved.
Similarly, President Dockworkers Branch MWUN, Comrade Tajudeen Ohize said that the union will not fold its hands when things are not done the right way after a very long period agitation with the IOCs.
According to him ,”The multinationals cannot do such in other countries and we want to put a stop to all these anomalies once and for all”
On his part,President Seamen,NIWA Branch MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi called on members of the union to ensure that” injury to one is injury to all.”
Bunu assured the P.G MWUN that the leaders from all the branches will continue to stand by him in achieving a common goal.
