Primero CEO Unveils Bold Plan On Conversion Of 200 BRT Buses To CNG

Lagos is on the brink of a transportation revolution as Fola Tinubu, the Managing Director/CEO of Primero Transport Services, has boldly announced a groundbreaking partnership with the Federal Government to convert 200 Lagos BRT buses from polluting diesel to ultra-clean Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) .

This move is set to slash commuter costs and transform public transit forever.

Speaking at Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP) roundtable in Lagos on Thursday, Tinubu didn’t hold back, revealing Primero’s game-changing innovations that are redefining urban travel.

From lightning-fast WiFi onboard to seamless electronic ticketing, Lagos’s BRT system — powered by a fleet of 435 buses under Primero’s watch — is quickly stepping into the future of smart mobility.

But Tinubu says there’s more to the story. He issued a daring call for bold political action — urging the scrapping of outdated transport subsidies that have stifled progress for too long. His vision, A sleek, world-class transport system that’s efficient, affordable, and ready to propel Lagos into the global spotlight.

“This isn’t just about buses,” Tinubu declared. “It’s about unleashing the full potential of Nigeria’s transport sector through visionary leadership and fearless collaboration.”he said.

Tinubu’s fiery keynote hammered home the message that success hinges on united efforts between government, private businesses, and media — a trio that will shatter barriers and ignite Nigeria’s transportation renaissance.

 

Managing Director/CEO of Primero Transport Services, said “plans for a potential collaboration with the Federal Government to convert 200 Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses from diesel engines to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is ongoing .The initiative is designed to significantly reduce transportation costs and promote a greener, more efficient public transport system in Lagos.

Tinubu outlined Primero Transport’s ongoing efforts to modernize the city’s BRT services. These include the introduction of onboard WiFi and electronic ticketing systems aimed at enhancing passenger experience. Operating a fleet of 435 buses, Primero currently manages a substantial portion of Lagos’s BRT network..

 

Highlighting the importance of political will, Tinubu called for the removal of transport subsidies to pave the way for a world-class and sustainable public transportation framework. “We remain committed to maintaining a modern, efficient, and affordable transport system that meets the needs of Lagos residents,” he stated.

In his keynote address, Tinubu emphasized that overcoming operational challenges and scaling the industry requires close cooperation between public and private entities, as well as a supportive media environment to shape positive perception and policy development.

The roundtable also explored synergies between  logistics and urban mobility, underscoring the need for sustained dialogue, transparency, and visionary leadership to foster Nigeria’s transport and maritime advancement.
