Overloaded Boat Sinks in Sokoto Waters , 30 Bodies Recovered

A boat accident in Gorau, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State has claimed at least 30 lives, authorities and rescue workers said on Thursday.

The boat, carrying more than 50 people — men, women and children — capsized on a river during the early hours of Thursday.

Rescue teams recovered 30 bodies so far, while emergency responders continue searching for the remaining passengers.

Survivors were taken to nearby hospital for treatment; several were reported to be in critical condition, according to multiple sources.

Eyewitnesses said the vessel was overcrowded and encountered strong current .

Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and to confirm the final death toll.

Officials from the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the police and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were at the scene assisting recovery efforts.
