NPPM: MWUN Seeks PSTT Inventions To Monitor Private Jetties Operation

The President General, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has advocated for the Port Standing Task Team PSTT to extend its operational activities to private jetties across the littoral  states in furtherance to address issues bothering on insecurity, corruption and influx of contrabands into the country.

 

Adeyanju who spoke to newsmen on the sideline of  stakeholders meeting put together by PSTT of the Nigeria Port Process Manual (NPPM) on Thursday in Lagos , drew the attention of the government to look beyond the port corridors and emphasis more on  jetties surrounding major Seaports across the nation’s seaports.

The unionist lamented that the jetties are poorly manned by relevant authorities adding that with the success stories recorded so far by the PSTT at the port terminals and checking government agencies, there was the need to take the crusade to jetties  in curbing illicit importation .

He also expressed optimism that the PSTT would perform better adding that the Comrade Moses Fadipe led team should not focus more  on eradicating corruption from the mother ports alone but concentrate more on the jetties.

 

Adeyanju told journalists that “This taskforce formed by government should not focus on the port terminals alone or the port corridors alone but to extend their operations to jetties.

“We will continue to observe and watch their performance  but I believe there will be a robust administration under the watchful eyes of the PSTT .

 

“They should not centre their operations on Apapa and Tin Can Island Port alone . They should extend their operations to all jetties within the ports.

 

“Aside reducing miscreants from the Corridors. You don’t need to stay in one particular area but also go into the jetties and see their activities as well.

 

NPA , NIMASA and everybody must support PSTT to succeed.

“I believe the man coordinating the task team is a veteran and I know him. So, with the support from stakeholders .

 

PSTT comprises, Nigerian Ports Authority NPA; Department for State Security DSS ; Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission  (ICPC); and Nigerian Shippers’Council as lead agency .
