NNPP Warns: INEC’s Court Defiance Could Derail 2027 Polls

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has slammed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for repeatedly flouting court orders, warning that this could force adjustments to the 2027 election timetable.

NNPP Secretary-General, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday, in a statement described INEC’s actions as “unbelievable and disturbing,” especially under the leadership of a Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

The scribe called the commission an embarrassment to the rule of law.

“In a recent case, the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory ordered INEC to update its records within 72 hours, recognize the Dr. Agbo Major Gilbert-led National Working Committee (NWC) of NNPP, and file an affidavit of compliance.

“Three weeks later, INEC Chairman Professor Amupitan and his team have failed to act, offering no credible explanation.

Oginni noted in a statement from Abuja that “Time has been running against INEC since Honourable Justice Bello Kawu delivered the judgment. The commission was duly served, with proof in court records.”

He insisted INEC must grant NNPP equal preparation time for the 2027 elections, like other parties., adding that “We have started contempt proceedings and will pursue justice to the Supreme Court.”

The NNPP scribe urged the Federal Government, Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, Chief Justice of Nigeria, and President of the Nigerian Bar Association to intervene and investigate INEC.

He further called for a full overhaul of the commission—especially its legal department—to restore credibility, noting that “This defiance undermines court authority, threatens democracy, and contradicts President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda,” the statement concluded.
