MWUN Tasks Port Concessionaires To Provide “Special Daily Package” For Dockworkers
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has called on port concessionaires to map out strategies on how to provide special incentives for dockworkers in line with the federal government 14 days lockdown of Lagos State.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari over the weekend, issued a 14 days lockdown of Lagos, Ogun and Abuja respectively over the spread of covid19.
Though the lockdown has no effect on port operations in Lagos, leaders of the union embarked on the spot assessment to get first hand information on the safety of dockers at the seaports.
President General of the MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju who led his team on a courtesy visit to Lagos Ports Complex( (LPC) and Tin Can Island Port Complex (TCIPC) since last week, reiterated that Union’s commitment in ensuring a befitting welfare package and proper safety standards for members against the dreaded Coronavirus pandemic across the globe.

While speaking with a large number of dockworkers at Tin Can Island Containers Terminal (TICT) on Tuesday, Adeyanju noted that the visit to the terminals in the two seaports in Lagos State was as part of efforts to enforce compliance to safety measures put in place by both port health officials and the federal Ministry of health through the NCDC by terminal operators.
Adeyanju who had so far led national officers to ENL, PTML, FIVE STAR LOGISTICS, PORT and CARGO, APMT, JOSEPDAM and TICT called on the concessionaires join forces in curbing the dreaded Coronavirus pandemic through provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for workers.
“We also negotiate special daily rates for dockworkers who will work throughout the duration of government 14 days lock down.”
He called on dockworkers to be fully kitted before boarding of vessels .
The President General also engaged the labour workers on their day to day operational activities in the face of the lockdown and covid19 pandemic .
