MWUN Extends IOCs Strike Notice Over Interventions From NPA

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN ) on Wednesday, extended its earlier strike notice against International Oil Companies (IOCs)  till Friday 23rd 2021, following Interventions from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

 

The labour union said  management of NPA pleaded on behalf of the IOCs , pointing out that talks were ongoing for the multinationals to comply against the backdrop of the Extant Stevedore Regulations laws.

 

 

President General of the Nigerian Labour Congress , affiliate union, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the meeting between Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria and the NPA,  said ” We just have to listen to the port authority because they are the master stevedore in Nigeria.

 

“We are only trying to extend our ultimatum based on the agreement we have with the NPA. The ultimatum has been extended no doubt but  let us see what NPA will do with the IOCs at the moment.

 

According to him,  the union also suspended the protest against APMT, following Interventions by the NPA and the Nigerian Shippers’Council .

 

He noted that progress has been recorded to a  large extent on the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the concessionaire.

 

The President General said: ” APMT was shutdown based on the anti labour activities by management of the facility but as we speak the concessionaire are complying to  the agitations of the labour workers.”

 

He also said the union had engaged the Seaports Command of the Nigerian Immigration Services to step up its operations to checkmate the activities and influx  of foreigners at the nation’s port.

EXTENSION OF STRIKE NOTICE said: “The Maritime workers union of Nigeria (MWUN) wishes to draw the attention of the general public to its press release of Friday April 9th, 2021 on the above subject.

 

“We wish to further inform the general public that the seven (7) days’ notice for the international Oil Companies to comply with the Extant Stevedore Regulations has been Extended till the close of work by 18:00ohrs on FrIday, 23 2021.

 

“This followed the Nigerian Ports Authority Management’s plea for a delayed action till Friday 23/4/21 to enable her (NPA) intervene and prevail on the lOCs to comply with the Extant Stevedore Regulations accordingly, failure of which the Union shall have no other option than to embark on a nationwide industrial action to press home its demand.”it noted .
