MWUN Boss Warns Workers To Suspend Operations Onboard Suspected Vessels Laden With Illicit Drugs

The President General, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju on Tuesday, warned dockworkers to halt operational activities aboard ships suspected to be laden with illicit drugs urging members to be vigilant while at work.

 

Adeyanju gave the warning during the District Branch election held in Lagos, even as he reiterated the union’s commitment to partner the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA in fishing out bad eggs in port operations.

 

The President General who also warned that any unit members caught in connection with drug trafficking onboard vessels will be expelled from union activities with membership withdrawal, pointing out that MWUN will not allow anyone or group to drag its name to the mud.

 

He threatened to disband district executives that fails to instruct the labour workers on surveillance mechanism before the commencement of cargo discharge onboard ships noting that workers at quay can give out useful information illicit drugs Importation into the country.

 

“Any unit or anybody from the union that is caught in connection with these illicit drug trafficking we are talking about,will be expelled,  then that unit and the district will be disbanded with immediate effect.

 

“Enough is enough, we cannot allow our seaports to be the hotbed of drug trafficking. We must not allow the name of  dockworkers to be dragged into this mess.

 

“If you are caught and you present yourself as dockworker, under interrogation , I can assure you that such a person ceased to be our member.

 

He also called on the Dockworkers Branch President to carry out routine check of workers activities at the quay apron noting that drug trafficking has what it takes to destroy a nation if not nipped in the bud.

 

Apparently determined to protect workers at the port terminals, Adeyanju called on the labour workers to be proactive onboard vessels while at work , saying the union will not allow innocent citizens to be under the custody of security agencies unlawfully.

 

The union boss also urged executives of the various districts at Lagos seaports to work in unity on information sharing in curbing the menace of illegal drug importation .

 

It would be recalled that leadership of the union had expressed dissatisfaction over the detention of members by the NDLEA over issues bothering on illicit drugs onboard vessels at the Lagos Port .
