Dr. Abimbola Bowale, Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District IV, stated that the district is collaborating with PSI under the theme: “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer.” He explained that activities will include blood pressure screening and public education on the causes, control, and management of hypertension.

“Hypertension, or high blood pressure, can result from various factors such as unhealthy lifestyle choices, underlying medical conditions, and genetics. Many cases, known as essential hypertension, have no single identifiable cause,” Dr. Bowale said.

He added that blood pressure can be naturally lowered by maintaining a healthy diet with reduced salt intake, engaging in regular physical activity, managing stress, ensuring proper hydration and sleep, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption.

Dr. Oludolapo Sotunde, Director of Medical Services for Health District IV, warned that uncontrolled hypertension can lead to serious complications, including stroke, kidney damage, heart attack, vision loss, and heart failure caused by muscle thickening. She emphasized that regular monitoring and proper management are crucial to preventing these risks.
