Delta Govt’s Inability To Pay Salaries, Arrears, An Infringement On Teachers Rights-CDHR 

The Delta State Chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR on Thursday said the Delta State Government has infringed the rights of teachers with its inability to pay their(Teachers)salaries as well as arrears as at when due.

Delta State CDHR Chairman, Comrade(Dr.) Prince Kehinde-Taiga made the accusations during a “Child Rights training& sensitization programme for the Principal, teachers and Students of Essi College II, Warri.

He said Government’s inability to pay teachers is still owing between four to five months salaries at the Local Government level.

Taiga who was flanked by his State Secretary, Comrade Jonathan Giama stressed that the ugly acts has led to the low impacts of the teachers on the students.

Taiga noted that the development has forced some of the teachers for additional means of survival.

” It is even worse with the male teachers who are the bread winners of their families.

“I have not seen any teacher bought a car or built a house without loans.”

Taiga said the rights of teachers must be protected by the Government and citizens of this Country particularly the Delta State Government.”

Taiga also blamed the extortion of students by their teachers in the carious schools on the Government pointing out that stealing and corruption is now the order of the day within the teaching profession.

While insisting that teachers must get their salaries, arrears and other benefits from government especially where they worked for it, Taiga said teachers should also stop maltreat or violate the rights their students.

“The children also have rights. Take them as your own children. Teachers must know the whereabouts of their children. You must teachers and pupils relationships. If a student hates a teacher, he/she losts interest in that particular subjects. So, you must have teacher and student relationship.”

Taiga also said the acts of extortion of the students by teachers must be eradicated by Delta State Government.

CDHR Child Rights Coordinator,Aghogho Ighorhiowhunu urged the students to shun vices that are inimical to their lives, development and educational pursuits.

The Principal of Essi College II, Mrs. Magret Boyowa Oputu thanked the CDHR led by Comrade Taiga on behalf of the teachers for the sensitization just as she promised that the education gained will be put into good use.
