AMJON Deepens Collaboration With Maritime Workers Union, Congratulates New Leadership

The Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) on Wednesday at the Union’s national Secretariat in Lagos.

The AMJON delegation, led by Vice President Vera Osokpor and including key executives such as Secretary Segun Oladipupo and Treasurer Barnabas Esiet, called on the Union to congratulate Comrade Francis Bunu Abi on his recent election as President-General. The journalists commended the new leadership’s mandate and pledged full support for Comrade Bunu’s dynamic stewardship of the Union.

Describing Comrade Bunu as a pragmatic and press-friendly labour leader who is straightforward in his communication, AMJON expressed its commitment to working closely with him to advance the maritime sector. The association acknowledged the vital role MWUN plays in the growth of Nigeria’s economy and wished the President-General success in navigating the responsibilities of his office.

In his response, Comrade Bunu, a seasoned maritime expert and veteran sailor from Delta State, warmly thanked AMJON for the visit and reaffirmed his readiness to support the journalism community.

He underscored the importance of balanced, fair reportage free from sensationalism, noting that journalists serve as the crucial “watchdog” of the maritime industry. He further assured that the Union would remain open to fostering a strong and ongoing partnership with the Press.

The meeting concluded on a hopeful note, with both parties committed to deepening their collaboration for the benefit of the maritime sector and Nigeria as a whole.
