The leadership of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria(MWUN) has commended to the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh and other stakeholders for the release of the union’s abducted members.
President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju in a press release issued on Sunday morning, specifically lauded the role played by Jamoh in the process.
According to Adeyanju, Jamoh deployed deep blue assets for enhanced maritime security in achieving the release of the union members that were kidnapped earlier last week in Rivers State.
Adeyanju said in the statement that “We wish to announce to the public the good news of the release of five of our members who were kidnapped on the kula abomema water ways on their way to attend an official meeting in Port Harcourt.
“We also wish to thank all well meaning Nigerians and stakeholders for standing with us in our hour of need and pain.
“Equally, we deeply appreciate the critical and central role played by the Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency – Dr. Bashir Jamoh, for his immediate and decisive action of deploying the awesome arsenal of the deep blue project to use in securing the release of our kidnapped members as well as other Nigerians.
“On this note we want to urge NIMASA to continue in its good work of providing safety in our water ways and especially provide this in the riverine and creeks which seem to be more prone and vulnerable to pirate attacks.
” We pledge MWUN Willingness to continue to partner and collaborate in the onerous task of ensuring safety in our water ways.” Adeyanju said
Jamoh had earlier condemned the kidnap incident and assured of his agency’s commitment in securing release of the victims.
Adeyanju confirmed to our reporter on telephone that he is on his way to Rivers State to see the workers and monitor their welfare.
NIMASA had disclosed on Saturday that the eight Nigerians, among them five members of the Maritime Workers of Nigeria (MWUN) kidnapped by gunmen in Rivers State waters on Monday have regained their freedom.
The release of the abducted travellers, which occurred on Saturday evening is sequel to the intervension of the Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh and other stakeholders.
The DG of NIMASA broke the news after a phone conversation with the President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigerian (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju at about 8:15pm today
The abductees are believed to be in good physical condition and the MWUN President General is expected to provide detailed report on the incidents surrounding the abduction early next week.
The eight persons were travelling to Port Harcourt from Kula area in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, before the gunmen abducted them at the Kula-Abonema waterway.
