A’Ibom Executive Council Boosts Maritime Sector with Oron Terminal Development

At the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, significant attention was given to advancing the State’s maritime sector as part of its broader economic and infrastructural agenda.

Notably, the Council reviewed the progress of the Oron Maritime Terminal project, including associated jetties, ferry procurement, and supporting infrastructure.

The Council resolved to accelerate ongoing works to ensure the full resumption of maritime transport services, which is pivotal for boosting trade, connectivity, and the emerging blue economy corridor in the region.

According to a statement by Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, Commissioner for Information, Akwa Ibom State, on the 19, August 2025, the move aligns with the State’s commitment to leveraging its coastal and maritime resources to stimulate sustainable development, economic diversification, and job creation.

Furthermore,the statement disclosed that the establishment of a committee to curb illegal mining is an issue impacting coastal areas and reflects the Government’s intent to safeguard and regulate maritime and mineral resources within Akwa Ibom.

“These efforts collectively signal a strategic push towards strengthening maritime transport, enhancing port facilities, and unlocking the economic potential of the maritime domain for the benefit of the State’s populace.

“The maritime sector initiatives form a critical pillar of the ARISE Agenda, under the leadership of Governor Umo Eno, driving Akwa Ibom’s transformation as a key maritime and economic hub in the Niger Delta region.”
