IMO Chief Calls Attacks On Red Sea Shipping “Indefensible,” Urges Release Of Captive Seafarers

Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary‑General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), strongly condemned the recent attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea area, describing them as “indefensible.”

According to a statement on Thursday, the IMO Chief noted that “These attacks endanger the lives of seafarers and threaten the security of international shipping, the marine environment and the stability of global supply chains,”

He emphasized that seafarers are civilians performing essential work that sustains economies and communities worldwide, and must never be placed in harm’s way or targeted in conflict situations.

Dominguez urged ship operators to thoroughly assess risks before transiting the region and renewed his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all seafarers still being held captive following piracy incidents in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

He said ensuring their safety is a fundamental obligation under international law and a shared responsibility of the global community.

Noting the Red Sea’s role as a critical maritime corridor for international trade, the IMO chief warned that continued attacks could escalate tensions, further disrupt commercial routes and undermine freedom of navigation.

“De‑escalation is the only solution,” he stated.
The Secretary‑General also expressed concern about potential pollution from the reported incidents in the Red Sea and earlier events in the Strait of Hormuz. He confirmed that the IMO will continue to monitor the situation and stands ready to provide assistance as necessary.
