NMNO/WTSSA Chief Canvasses ‘Give To Gain’ Mentorship For Women

Captain Awonuga Saliu Adetayo, Chairman of the Shipping Zonal Council for the Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNO/WTSSA), has called for greater mentorship and support for women in the transport sector during International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026 celebrations held recently.

In a statement marking the occasion under the theme “Give To Gain,” Capt. Awonuga extended fraternal greetings from National President Chief Engr. Bob Joseph Yousuo and Secretary General Comrade (Elder) Alekhue John Okpono, who were absent due to contingencies.

The mariner reiterated that “We join the global community to celebrate the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of women across the transport sectors and others,”

He emphasized the theme’s essence: giving knowledge, time, mentorship—described as the “Four Ts: Thinking, Time, Treasure, and Talent”—builds lasting legacies.

Drawing from his seafaring career, Capt. Awonuga shared how he mentored young officers, including cadets, 3rd Officers on safety, 2nd Officers on navigation, and Chief Mates on cargo operations.

“Today, those same officers have risen to become Masters, Chief Engineers, Superintendents, and industry leaders,” he noted.

“They still pay me homage out of gratitude. I gave, and now I gain: in honour, respect, and satisfaction.”

He urged the industry to adopt this “Give To Gain” mindset by mentoring female cadets, opening doors in shipping, logistics, and port operations, and advocating for gender equality.

“When women rise, the entire transport sector sails forward,” he stated, adding: “Train a woman, train a nation! Women are good managers, ambassadors, thinkers, home builders, and the embodiment of luck. No woman, no nation. Our gender, our strength!”

Capt. Awonuga concluded with a call for abundant giving to forge gender equality, signing the message on behalf of the National President.
