Lagosians Urged To Protect Lagoon In Creative New Push

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), alongside Iranti Press and A Whitespace Creative Arts Foundation (AWCA), has launched the “Library on the Lagoon” initiative to combat environmental abuses and pollution in the Lagos Lagoon.

This one-week project runs from Sunday, April 26 to Saturday, May 2, 2026, daily from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Five Cowries Creek Terminal, Falomo, Ikoyi.

Designed to boost environmental awareness, community involvement, and sustainable habits among residents, the event features interactive elements like a typewriter that powers a trash collection wheel in the water—letting participants type their visions for a cleaner lagoon while aiding cleanup.

LASEPA’s General Manager, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, called on Lagosians to join actively, stressing collective responsibility to protect the lagoon, ensure safety, and sustain water transport.

Project Director Maryam Kazeem highlighted targeting water users, picnickers, and riverine communities to curb plastic waste, sewage, and dumping. The installation blends action with reflection on the lagoon’s history and everyone’s role in its future.

LASEPA’s Director of Partnerships, Grants Management and Innovations, Mrs. Shonibare Olabisi, affirmed the agency’s push for such collaborations to tackle challenges and build stewardship.
