Sea Robbers Cart Away Crew Phones , Paints On Board Vessel At Eko Support Terminal , As MWUN Fumes
The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), under President-General Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has voiced outrage over a daring robbery targeting crew members onboard a vessel at Lagos seaports, exposing critical security failures at quay aprons.
The alarming incident unfolded on Vessel MV ZY JU HE at EKO Support terminal ,around 0400hrs (4:00am) Sunday, when thieves infiltrated the ship and robbed the crew.
According to a statement by the union, the robbers ransacked the AFT store, seizing five tins of paint alongside a crew member’s mobile phone—striking at both personal belongings and essential ship supplies.
Crew observations confirmed the robbers boarded without ladders, aided by poor visibility from inadequate lighting around the store. Safety team members onboard quickly sounded whistles, but the alarm proved too faint.
The thieves responded by hurling the stolen items into the sea, leaping overboard, and speeding away in a boat as the vessel’s siren activated.Contacted on the robbery, MWUN’s PG Comrade Bunu fumed at the lax security allowing thieves to target crew directly on berthed ships, making off with valuables effortlessly.
The maritime expert passionately urges security agencies at seaports nationwide to bolster vigilance, safeguard quay aprons and premises, and protect crew lives and property for seamless business.
