FG Rolls Out Education Policy To Cut Costs, Says Graduation Ceremony For Primary 6, JSS 3, SSS 3 Students

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a new policy framework aimed at slashing education costs for parents of graduating Primary 6, JSS3, and SSS3 students, while boosting learning outcomes through reusable, high-quality textbooks and a uniform academic calendar.

Jointly announced by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id, the reforms detailed in a statement on Friday, January 9, 2026, by ministry spokesperson Boriowo Folasade, prioritize durable, standardized textbooks lasting four to six years.

These reusable materials eliminate the need for annual purchases, ban bundled disposable workbooks, and allow siblings to share resources, directly easing the financial burden on families during key graduation years.

A major highlight is the streamlined graduation ceremonies, now limited exclusively to Primary 6, JSS3, and SSS3 completers to cut unnecessary expenses and waste.

This aligns with a nationwide uniform academic calendar for consistent teaching and planning.The policy also enforces rigorous quality assurance by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), curbing frequent superficial textbook revisions and capping approved titles per subject and grade to match global standards, while ensuring graduating students access truly improved, sustainable materials without recurring costs.

The Ministry of Education reaffirmed its drive for equitable, high-quality education nationwide.
