SHOCKING SLAVE LABOUR: MWUN Slams Shipping Lines Over Casualisation Of Workers
The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has frowned upon the continuous casualisation of workers by employers of labour in the shipping sub sector.
In a fiery denunciation, Comrade Olufemi Oluyinka Abass, Shipping Branch President of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), unleashed scathing criticism against shipping industry captains and terminal operators for their ruthless casualization of workers – turning dedicated maritime labourers into disposable, peanut-paid contractors.
The union leader in a statement on Christmas day, exposed how these industry giants outsource jobs to shady contractors, flouting labour laws and enforcing brutal casual labour that strips workers of rights, security, and dignity.
Abass said”This is nothing short of a ‘Slave Drive’ ideology, even as he declared, slamming the vicious, callous practices that dehumanize employees, erode permanent jobs, and deliberately weaken union presence to maximize profits at the workers’ expense.
While these tycoons claim casualization is “cost-effective,” Abass called it a wicked ploy to neglect global and local decent work standards, plunging peasant workers into poverty.
He vowed swift union action: “The time to crush this industrial manipulation is now. We’ll report to top leadership for strict measures to sanitize the maritime sector and restore livable conditions.
“The crisis has sparked outrage, with MWUN demanding an end to this erosion of permanent employment before it’s too late.”he said.
