TCN: Fire Incident At Egbin Power Plant Disrupts Electricity Supply In Lagos

A fire incident at the Egbin Power Plc on August 5, 2025, has caused significant disruption to electricity supply in parts of Lagos and nearby areas.

The General Manager of Public Affairs for TCN, Ndidi Mbah, in a statement expressed apologies to affected distribution companies and customers, pledging swift action to resolve the issue.

The fire, which broke out around 6:30 a.m., affected a key 150MVA power transformer belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) at its Egbin Transmission Substation.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire originated from a faulty 33kV instrument transformer (CT/VT) installed by Egbin Power Plc. The fire quickly spread and damaged the connected TCN transformer, resulting in oil leakage due to a tear in the transformer’s main tank.

The incident has led to a temporary reduction in bulk power supply to the Ikorodu and Odogunyan 132/33kV transmission substations, which supply electricity to IKEDC and IBEDC franchise areas. Additionally, power lines serving Sagamu Line 1, Sagamu Line 2, and Maryland Line 2 on the 132kV network within Lagos State have been affected.

At the time of the fire, a total load of 47MW was disrupted. This load has since been rerouted to a second 150MVA transformer at the substation, which is currently operating under strain. Consequently, there is an ongoing capacity deficit causing load-shedding in all affected regions.

TCN has mobilized efforts to source a replacement transformer and restore full power supply as quickly as possible. The company has also notified IKEDC and EKEDC to assist with load management during this period.
