LASWA Takes CNG Convertible Campaign To “Omi Bus’ Ferries

Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has canvassed for operators in the marine ecosystem to patronize the usage of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)- as part efforts to the decarbonization process .

In a bold move toward sustainable marine mobility, the Lagos State Government—throu LASWA and the Ministry of Transportation—today July 9 2025, convened a high-level strategic engagement focused on converting Omi-Bus ferries to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-Petrol hybrid vessels.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), RHKL/CNG4Marine, and infrastructure investors, to chart a clear roadmap for retrofitting existing ferries and deploying CNG refueling infrastructure across Lagos waterways.

A major highlight of the session was the live demonstration of the BGM CNG Hybrid Dual Fuel System, which showcased the potential of hybrid marine technology in reducing emissions and fuel costs.

Participants also deliberated on safety protocols, regulatory frameworks, and scalable strategies to accelerate CNG adoption within the inland waterways transport sector.

This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s national low-emission mobility objectives and reinforces Lagos State’s commitment to becoming a leader in clean, innovative, and sustainable water transportation.

In his welcome address, the General Manager of LASWA, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, highlighted the strategic importance of introducing CNG powered boats and Electric Ferries as part of LASWA’s long-term commitment to reducing carbon emissions, enhancing passenger safety, and lowering operational costs for operators. He emphasized that the waterways are central to Lagos’ future mobility plans, and energy transition remains a core pillar in actualizing this vision.

The team from the Presidential Initiative on CNG, led by the PD/CEO Engr Micheal Oluwagbemi provided insight into the federal government’s roadmap for accelerating CNG adoption across multiple transport sectors, including maritime. He shared the success stories from the road transport CNG adoption across the country and assured stakeholders of strong technical support and enabling policies towards the adoption of CNG for Marine.

The CEO RIL Hydro Krafts Limited Mr Layi Solesi delivered a technical presentation on the conversion process, fueling infrastructure, safety standards, and the long-term economic benefits of CNG usage in marine transport. He also showcased successful case studies from other coastal cities and expressed readiness to work closely with LASWA and the boat operators on pilot schemes.

Boat operators present raised critical questions and shared concerns regarding affordability, safety, engine compatibility, fueling infrastructure, and maintenance.
