Even as the flood gradually recedes within the Ndokwa East Local Government Area (NELGA) of Delta State, a total of 73 communities were submerged by the natural disaster in the past three weeks.
Chairman , NELGA , Mr. Juan Amechee Governor who disclosed the figure on Tuesday , in a statement and a copy made available to DAILY FOCUS NIGERIA, noted that plans for post flooding activities has been of major concern adding that the Council is soliciting assistance in the following areas due to lack of capacity to manage it alone across the entire LGA.
Disclosing the ripple effects of the flood on the roads ,the Chairman stressed the need for urgent repair work on the road linking various communities under the local authority, which includes: Ashaka – Kwale Road, Ashaka – Arhade Roads, Ashaka – Aboh Road, Ase Road, Asaba Ase Road, Aboh – Akarai Road, Roads in the seven Ibrede Clans, Iselegu – Inyi/Onuabor road, Oko through the several Utchi clans down to Okpai Roads, Obiikwele Road, Igbuku – Ibrede Road , thus to enable safe commuting back to the affected communities.
The NGLEA boss also reaffirmed commitment that those affected by the flood at various IDP camps are to be relocated back to their various communities, noting that with the receding floods, people are going to face some new degree of post floods challenging situation.
He said “As the flood waters begin to recede, the NELGA Council focus is more of relief efforts aimed at returning things to normal. Most times, during this post flood phase, many structures and properties may be needlessly lost and damaged through hasty clean-up procedures.
“On the basis of this, the Council is commencing wide awareness and sensitization program to let our people know that the best way to help our communities, property, or structure prevent additional damage and maintain its integrity and character during these times of duress is with the use of proper caution and concern.
“While the water is receding, we encourage our people to plan the future steps to rehabilitation and restoration carefully. Each decision made today affects future decisions which will need to be made tomorrow.
” With the receding floods, our people are going to face some new degree of post floods challenging situation. The NELGA Council is therefore soliciting assistance in the following areas since we do not have the capacity to manage it alone across the entire LGA with its Seventy Three major communities that was submerged in water these past three weeks.
According to him,the post flood needs will be of great priority in the next two weeks at which period we anticipate that most of the flooded communities may be fully accessible.
“The NELGA Council is aware that palliatives are being taken to the various IDP camps at both Kwale and Ashaka. In addition to the earlier announced donations, some items were recently received from Rt. Hon. Friday Osanebi. Also our daughter Adinkwu Mabel sent some items to the various IDP camps and Rt. Hon. Ossai N Ossai also sent some palliatives to the various IDP camps while the IPD camp at Ashaka powered by DESOPADEC in collaboration with the NELGA Council continues to get the necessary attention to ensure that our people there are safe, sound and healthy with regular feeding and daily stipends to cushion their non-conventional daily needs off meal periods.
“The NELGA 2022 Flood Management Committee carried out detailed documentation of number of displaced households in NEGA communities. Please note that a household here refers to arrangements made by persons, individually or in groups, for providing themselves with food or other essentials for living.
“Also note that the data is based on our records based on the registered community data with our Community Development Department and information gathered from the various communities, IDP camps etc. Therefore if you have contradictory data, kindly contact your ward representatives in the NELGA Flood Committee. ”
