VehCAP : SON-NADDC Launch New Guidelines For Vehicle Importation

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) have launched the Vehicle Conformity Assessment Programme (VehCAP) to enhance safety, quality, and compliance for imported new and used vehicles.

According to a notice by the two agencies of government, the new policy builds on existing frameworks without disrupting trade.

SON-NADDC pointed out that Importers are to understand that pre-shipment certification is encouraged but not mandatory yet, adding that vehicles arriving without VehCAP certification won’t be stopped or stranded at ports.

The agencies disclosed that ” Normal customs clearance applies first. Your vehicle proceeds through standard port processes as usual.
Mandatory post-arrival steps: After customs, present the vehicle for destination inspection and in-country conformity verification at designated SON/NADDC testing centers.
Successful verification unlocks next steps. You’ll receive clearance documentation for vehicle registration and licensing.
