UPDATE: Evergreen Confirms Crew Safe After Container Loss Off Peru Coast

Taiwan’s Evergreen Marine Corp., the country’s largest container shipping company, has reported that all crew members aboard the Ever Lunar are safe after roughly 50 containers fell overboard off the coast of Peru on the morning of August 1, 2025.

The ship was anchored near the Port of Callao, awaiting entry, when it suddenly experienced severe rolling. This caused containers in the aft (stern) section to topple into the sea.

Evergreen suggested that the unusual rolling might have been triggered by environmental factors such as a recent tsunami linked to an earthquake in Russia, harsh winter sea conditions in the Southern Hemisphere, and sudden large waves. The incident led to a temporary suspension of port operations at Callao.

Authorities confirmed that no hazardous materials were among the lost containers, which primarily contained plastic products, minimizing environmental risk.

The company is cooperating fully with local officials investigating the cause of the accident. No injuries were reported in the incident.
