UN General Assembly Elects Muhammad- Bande As President

The Nigeria ‘s ambassador to the United Nation , Professor Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, on Tuesday was elected President of the UN General Assembly .

 

Professor Muhammed – Bande is the second Nigerian elected as United Nations President

 

Professor Muhammad-Bande, 62, was elected by acclamation, said the current President of the General Assembly, Maria Fernanda Espinosa.

The Nigerian diplomat was Director General of his country’s National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies and holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from Boston University and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto.

He will replace the current President of the UN General Assembly, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, the fourth woman to hold this responsibility.

 

Born on the 7 th of December , 1957 the UN chief is a Nigerian political scientist, administrator and career diplomat.

 

He was the permanent representative of Nigeria to United Nations and served as the Vice-President of the General Assembly during its 71st session in September 2016.

 

The Presidency of the Assembly changes each year through an established rotation among the five geographic groups of the Assembly: Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Western Europe.

In 1989 , Joseph Nanven Garba, a Nigeria. also headed the United Nations .
